Hi, I’m Shayne Smith.

I started Middle Grounds Coffee when I was 23 years old in the most unexpected place — the back corner of a local hardware store. With $5,000, two maxed-out credit cards, and a whole lot of faith, I opened a tiny coffee counter and prayed that people would show up. And they did. Not just for coffee, but for connection, encouragement, and a place that felt genuine.

What began as a small dream tucked inside a hardware store has now grown into my first true brick-and-mortar shop in East Nashville’s Five Points. This space is such an answered prayer. Every step of this journey has been guided by God, and I’m grateful every day for how He’s turned small beginnings into something so much bigger than me.

At Middle Grounds, we focus on high-quality coffee made with house-made syrups, thoughtful ingredients, and intentional care. But more than anything, my heart for this shop is to create a community — a place where people feel welcome, seen, and connected. A spot where neighbors become friends, where creativity is encouraged, and where everyone has a seat at the table.

This isn’t just a coffee shop to me. It’s a gathering place built on faith, purpose, and the belief that community can change people’s lives.

Whether you’re grabbing a latte, picking up an online order, or simply looking for a moment of peace in your day, I’m so glad you’re here. Welcome to Middle Grounds.

About Our Roaster

SKY BEAR COFFEE

I first discovered Sky Bear Coffee while shopping locally at Smokin’ Oats. I picked up a bag on a whim, took it home, and had no idea that this single bag of coffee would eventually lead to one of the most meaningful partnerships in my business. I didn’t meet Lesa that day — but her coffee spoke for her long before we ever exchanged a word.

Lesa is the incredible woman behind Sky Bear Coffee. She’s in her 60s, endlessly wise, deeply passionate about her craft, and one of the kindest souls you’ll ever meet. When we finally connected, she welcomed me into the coffee world with open arms. What started as a simple conversation quickly grew into a mentorship that has shaped both me and Middle Grounds in ways I couldn’t have imagined.

She roasts right here in Nashville, pouring decades of knowledge, care, and intention into every batch. Lesa has taught me so much — not only about coffee, but about running a business with heart, resilience, and purpose. Her willingness to share her expertise and cheer me on has been one of the greatest blessings in building Middle Grounds.

We couldn’t be more proud to serve her coffee. It’s more than just beautifully roasted beans — it’s the product of a woman who believes in community, craftsmanship, and lifting up the next generation. Lesa has become a huge part of our story, and Middle Grounds wouldn’t be the same without her.

Roasted locally. Rooted in community. Inspired by mentors like Lesa
